Cyprus signs statement by 56 countries on reinstating UN restrictions on Iran — Cyprus Mail

Cyprus has joined a joint statement by 56 states that reaffirmed their commitment to implementing United Nations restrictions on Iran. As Cyprus Mail reports, the document was signed overnight into Saturday.

Reinstatement of UN Security Council resolutions

The statement refers to the return into force of UN Security Council resolutions No. 1696 of 2006, No. 1737 of 2006, No. 1747 of 2007, No. 1803 of 2008, No. 1835 of 2008, and No. 1929 of 2010.

The reinstatement of the resolutions was linked to the completion of the snapback procedure, a mechanism for restoring restrictions. The statement said that this step was a response to Tehran’s “continued and significant” non-compliance with its nuclear commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, known as the JCPOA.

Restrictions on technology and arms

The signatory states also committed to continuing measures to prevent the supply, sale or transfer to Iran of materials, equipment, goods and technologies that could contribute to proliferation-sensitive nuclear activities or the development of nuclear weapon delivery systems.

They also reaffirmed their intention to comply with restrictions on the supply, sale and transfer of arms and related materials to or from Iran. The statement’s participants pledged to apply effective measures to prevent the direct or indirect sale, supply and transfer of goods that could contribute to the creation of weapons of mass destruction, their means of delivery, or fall under the reinstated UN arms restrictions.

Call for cooperation with the IAEA

The signatories welcomed efforts to implement obligations under the UN Security Council resolutions and called on all UN member states to implement the listed decisions. They also said they intended to coordinate actions to counter Iran’s attempts to resume the development of its nuclear or ballistic missile programmes.

At the end of the statement, the 56 countries called on Iran to return to fulfilling its non-proliferation obligations, cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and address the international community’s non-proliferation concerns.
