Russian strikes on the protective shell of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant are extremely irresponsible acts that jeopardize international efforts to address the consequences of the disaster. At the same time, the illegal seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant significantly increases the risks to human life and the environment.
This was stated by European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas on social media platform X.
She emphasized that even 40 years after the accident, Chernobyl remains under threat.
“Four decades after the disaster, Chernobyl remains under threat. Russian strikes on the facility’s protective shell are an act of extreme recklessness that jeopardizes decades of international efforts to contain the damage,” Kallas wrote.
She also stated that the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by Russian forces poses an additional danger to the civilian population and the environment.
Kallas emphasized that Moscow’s actions repeat old approaches to concealing the truth.
“In 1986, Moscow downplayed the severity of the disaster. Today, it restricts access to information to conceal battlefield losses. A different era, the same scenario,” she concluded.
