Hungary has lifted some of the restrictions on Ukrainian grain

Hungary has lifted the emergency restrictions that had banned the import of certain Ukrainian agricultural products, including grain and meat. Subsequently, some of the temporary measures were converted into permanent laws; however, key restrictions on Ukrainian goods were not included in the new package. Discussions regarding imports are ongoing, according to Agroinform.hu.

Hungary has officially lifted the emergency government decrees that previously restricted the import of a range of Ukrainian agricultural goods. This marks the end of temporary bans that covered more than 20 product categories, including wheat, corn, sunflower seeds, rapeseed, flour, poultry meat, and eggs.

Following the end of the emergency regime, the Hungarian government converted some of the decisions into permanent legislative provisions; however, the ban on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products was not included in the new package. This effectively opens the door for the resumption of supplies of certain goods to the Hungarian market.

At the same time, the situation remains tense. MAGOSZ, the largest agricultural organization, stated that current regulations are insufficient to protect local farmers and called on the government to enshrine the restrictions in law. They fear that the return of Ukrainian products will intensify competition and could affect domestic prices.

Despite the lifting of some bans, certain import control mechanisms remain in place: importers are still required to notify Hungary’s National Food Chain Safety Office of product imports. The government’s final decision on a possible reinstatement of the full ban has not yet been announced.

Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was struck. Officials in Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that urgent countermeasures were being prepared.

Transcarpathiahas suffered the most massive attack by Russia since the start of the war — Regional Military Administration.
