A Ukrainian F-16 was spotted in the skies over Poland

UA.NEWS 21 August 2026 18:12
A Ukrainian F-16 was spotted in the skies over Poland

On Thursday evening, a Ukrainian fighter jet flew over Polish territory. The aircraft was flying at an altitude of about 9,000 meters and was heading northwest; its route may have been toward Denmark. It is likely an F-16 that Denmark previously transferred to Ukraine.

The aircraft entered Polish airspace after 8:00 p.m. It did not transmit precise identification data to air traffic tracking services, so it is impossible to officially determine the type of aircraft based on this information.

At the same time, eyewitnesses speculated that it could have been an F-16 fighter jet. The aircraft’s possible route also supports this theory. According to Defence24, the aircraft was flying at an altitude of approximately 9,000 meters in a northwesterly direction. Its possible destination is said to be the Vejen Air Base in Denmark. It could be one of the Danish F-16s previously transferred to Ukraine as part of an international aviation coalition.

Why the aircraft might have been returning to Denmark

The exact reason for the flight is currently unknown. Defence24 speculates that the fighter jet may have been sent to Denmark for a technical inspection or repairs. Once the necessary work is completed, the aircraft will likely return to Ukraine. However, this is only speculation, as there is no official information regarding the purpose of the flight.

Ukraine uses F-16s to defend its airspace and carry out combat missions. For security reasons, precise information about flight routes and the number of operational aircraft is not disclosed.

How Many F-16s Has Ukraine Received?

Ukraine began receiving its first F-16s in the summer of 2024. Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium agreed to transfer the fighter jets. According to open-source data, Ukraine has already received about 40 such aircraft. Most of them are F-16AM/BM MLU variants. The exact number of fighter jets currently in combat service has not been officially reported. According to estimates from open sources, there are slightly more than 30 such aircraft.

The Netherlands has transferred 24 fighter jets to Ukraine, and Denmark has transferred 19. Norway had previously announced its intention to transfer six aircraft, but Ukraine has not received them. They are planned to be used, in particular, for training Ukrainian pilots and ground crew. Belgium has pledged to transfer the largest number of F-16s—about 50 aircraft. Some of them are airworthy, while others may be used as a source of spare parts.

Deliveries of the Belgian fighter jets are scheduled to take place over several years and may continue until the end of 2029. This is due to the Belgian Air Force’s transition to the newer F-35s. Thus, the Ukrainian fighter jet’s flight over Poland may be related to the aircraft’s transfer to Denmark for maintenance. However, without official confirmation, it is currently impossible to determine the exact reason for its route. This was reported by the Defence24 portal.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Israeli ambassador after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) closed the investigation into the 2024 strikes on the World Central Kitchen humanitarian convoy in Gaza. Seven humanitarian workers were killed in the attack, including Polish citizen Damian Sobol, according to Notes from Poland.
