Hurricane "Lala" passed near the Big Island of Hawaii: at least one person died
Hurricane "Lala" passed near the Big Island of Hawaii on Saturday without making landfall, but brought strong winds and heavy rains to the region. The storm flooded roads, and waterways turned into raging torrents, The Guardian World reports, citing the Associated Press.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said that at least one person died in a car accident near South Point on the Big Island. Approximately 60,000 households were temporarily without power, 19 roofs were blown off, and 190 flights were delayed.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, hurricane-force winds could continue through the night, with the strongest gusts expected in high-altitude areas. Heavy rainfall through Sunday could cause flooding and landslides, while powerful waves pounded the coast.

Tropical storm warnings remained in effect for the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau as “Lala” moved westward. On Saturday morning, the cyclone intensified from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds reaching 120 km/h.
Forecasters predicted up to 63.5 cm of rainfall in the highlands of the Big Island, where heavy rains could trigger life-threatening landslides. On Maui and in the lower elevations of the Big Island, 20.3–30.5 cm of rain was expected, while in other parts of the archipelago, 10.2–15.2 cm was forecast. Shelters were opened and events were canceled across the islands.
