Ghanaian government plans to hire 10,000 teachers in 2027

The Ghanaian government plans to hire another 10,000 teachers in 2027 to address staff shortages in basic and secondary education institutions. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu stated this, MyJoyOnline reports.

The recruitment is expected to be included in the 2027 budget. The government also plans to expand educational infrastructure.

School funding

According to Iddrisu, Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) formula for 2027 should provide between $250 million and $300 million to improve conditions at ten Category A schools. Another 20 Category B schools are planned to be upgraded to Category A level.

The minister also expressed concern about the ratio of theoretical to practical instruction at technical and vocational education institutions. According to him, this type of education is important for reducing unemployment and underemployment, but 90% of instruction in specialized schools is theoretical and only 10% is practical.

Student placement

Iddrisu said that more than 850,000 vacant places at schools had been announced nationwide. In his view, the main problem with the student placement system is not an overall shortage of places, but high demand for particular institutions.

He cited data from the 2026 student placement campaign: approximately 328,000 schoolchildren chose Category A institutions, although only 76,000 places were available there. The minister said that with such figures, it is impossible to meet all applications for admission to these schools.
