The Polish government has acknowledged that the country is already in a state of hybrid war
Poland is effectively already in a state of hybrid war due to constant attacks from Russia. According to the Polish government, Moscow carries out daily cyberattacks on government systems, is stepping up its disinformation campaigns, and is using fake accounts of government officials to gather information.
This was stated by Krzysztof Hawkowski, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs.
According to Hawkowski, Poland has identified a link between acts of sabotage and other critical incidents in the country and the intensification of Russian disinformation. “Russia is waging war against Poland. This is a real hybrid war that is already underway,” the deputy prime minister emphasized.
The minister reported that Polish information systems are subjected to hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of cyberattacks every day. In addition, Moscow is increasingly using trolls and bot networks to spread disinformation and attempt to destabilize the situation in the country.
According to Gavkovsky, Russian intelligence agencies are also employing a new cyberespionage scheme: on the Signal and WhatsApp messaging apps, attackers create fake accounts impersonating Polish ministers and other high-ranking officials. Posing as these officials, they contact government agencies, research institutes, and state-owned companies in an attempt to obtain classified information or trick their interlocutors into taking specific actions.
In light of this, Polish authorities have already prepared recommendations for government agencies and companies on how to respond to such fraud attempts. According to Gawkowski, these operations are part of Russian intelligence services’ efforts to destabilize the situation in Poland.
