In Adelaide, Australia, an 18-year-old driver with a learner’s permit has been charged after a crash in which a 17-year-old passenger died. The accident occurred overnight in the northern suburb of Elizabeth Vale.

According to ABC News Australia, at about 3:15 a.m., police received a report that a station wagon had crashed into a Stobie pole at the intersection of John Rice Avenue and Marlicombe Road.
The 17-year-old passenger from the Direk area died at the scene. Three other passengers were unharmed. The driver, a resident of the Parafield Gardens area, was detained and taken to hospital for testing. Investigators from the Major Crash Investigation Section attended the scene.

Charges and court hearing
South Australia Police said the man was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in circumstances of aggravation, refusing to provide a breath sample, three breaches of learner’s permit conditions, and driving without a qualified supervising driver.
Police refused him bail. He is due to appear before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later that day. The teenager’s death was the 85th road fatality in South Australia since the beginning of the year.
