Accra to hold clean-up after Homowo festival

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a post-Homowo festival clean-up exercise as part of the September National Sanitation Day campaign. The work in Accra is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., MyJoyOnline reports.

Clean-up areas

The exercise will cover major roads, markets, transport terminals, public spaces and communities within the city. Participants will clear and weed road medians, remove rubbish, sweep public areas, clean curbs, and tidy major roads and business districts.

The AMA plans to pay particular attention to Graphic Road and the section of J. J. Rawlings Avenue from the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange through Avenor and Caprice to the Abeka Junction. Work will also be carried out in other locations identified as requiring urgent sanitation attention.

Operation of retail outlets

During the exercise, shops, kiosks, table-top trading outlets and other commercial establishments must remain closed. The Assembly called on residents, businesses and other stakeholders to join the clean-up.

The AMA noted that the event is part of broader efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect public health and keep the capital clean. According to the Assembly’s assessment, the exercise should also help make road corridors safer and strengthen the shared responsibility of residents and businesses for the cleanliness of Accra.
