Search continues in Australia for missing pilot after plane crash in Gulf of Carpentaria
Police in Australia’s Northern Territory are continuing the search for Tasmanian pilot Bob Bramley, who went missing after a plane crash in remote waters near Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Rescuers have found wreckage from the aircraft, but unfavorable weather and the area’s inaccessibility are complicating the operation.
Circumstances of the crash
As ABC News Australia reports, at about 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, a witness aboard a boat said that a plane had fallen into the water near Wood Island. Police launched an investigation after receiving a report of the crash of a small charter aircraft operated by Air Frontier.
Air Frontier confirmed that its Beechcraft Baron crashed near Numbulwar around midday. According to the company, the aircraft was making a non-commercial flight from Gove to Numbulwar, and Bramley was believed to have been the only person on board.
Search operation
The search mission coordinator said that aircraft wreckage was found in the search area on Wednesday. This made it possible to refine the plan for the further operation.

The search site is located about 50 kilometers northwest of Alyangula. According to police, there is no accurate weather data for the area, and actual weather and sea conditions proved worse than the available online forecasts. The remoteness of the area also limits the ability to deploy additional resources.
On Thursday, police divers were expected to examine the seabed. Police are being assisted by Anindilyakwa sea rangers, Nautilus Aviation helicopters, and search-and-rescue teams based in Alyangula.

Bramley’s family said they could not comprehend the immense loss in their lives. In 2019, when he was 16, Bramley flew around Australia in a small aircraft to draw attention to youth suicide. He also founded the youth mental health support and suicide prevention initiative Surviving Turbulence.
Air Frontier said it had grounded all of its Beechcraft Baron aircraft as a precaution until it receives advice from the relevant authorities. The causes of the crash are to be determined by authorized bodies.
