A man has been convicted in Austria for plotting a terrorist attack at a Taylor Swift concert
A court in Austria has handed down a verdict in a case involving the planning of a terrorist attack at a mass event. A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for planning an attack on Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna as part of her Eras Tour, which was scheduled to take place at the Ernst Happel Stadium in August 2024.

In accordance with Austrian privacy laws, the convicted man is referred to only as Beran A. In court, he pleaded guilty to planning the attack, as well as to other terrorism-related crimes, including the case involving the attack in Metz. Before sentencing, the man stated that he regretted his actions.
Beran A. was arrested following a tip from the CIA—shortly before the first of Taylor Swift’s three concerts in Vienna. Afterward, all of the singer’s Austrian performances were canceled. Nearly 200,000 fans were expected to attend.
Prosecutors argued that the man had become radicalized and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. According to the prosecution, he attempted to illegally acquire weapons for the attack, including a machine gun and a hand grenade, but was unable to do so.
Forensic psychiatrist Peter Hoffmann stated that no mental illness was found in Beran A. According to him, there is no “psychiatric explanation” for the defendant’s radicalization.
Along with him, the court in Wiener Neustadt heard the case of another 21-year-old man—Arda K. from Slovakia. Both were accused of involvement in a cell linked to the “Islamic State.” However, Arda K. was not involved in the plot to attack the Taylor Swift concert.
