In Estonia, a 79-year-old pensioner was mistakenly declared dead
In Narva, Estonia, 79-year-old pensioner Zinaida Yelina was mistakenly declared dead on August 18 and removed from the Population Register. As a result, her bank account was immediately blocked, while her identity documents and prescriptions became invalid. The woman will be left without pension payments for about a month.
Restoring documents and payments
Yelina received new identity documents on September 2. At the same time, according to information available at the time of publication, the resumption of her pension payments was due to take place another 10 days later. Until then, police advised her to ask relatives for financial assistance.

The pensioner believes she may have been confused with another person, although there is no confirmation of this. She also said that representatives of municipal and state institutions had inquired about her condition, but, according to her, no one apologized for the mistake.
Human error in the register
As ERR News reports, Estonia's Ministry of the Interior said that such errors occur two or three times a year and are usually linked to human error. Enel Pungas, head of the population data department, explained that the system cannot fully protect against situations in which an employee enters another person's data.
