Estonia to install bidirectional speed camera on Muhu Island
A new bidirectional speed camera cabinet will be installed on Wednesday in the Estonian village of Liiva on Muhu Island. It will be placed at the 78.6 km mark of the Risti—Virtsu—Kuivastu—Kuressaare road to help enforce the 40 km/h speed limit and make crossing the road safer for pedestrians, ERR News reports.
Control in both directions
The cabinet will be installed in the Virtsu—Kuressaare direction. The equipment will be able to measure vehicle speeds in both directions of travel.
At the same time, the camera will not begin measuring speed immediately after installation. First, Estonia’s Transport Administration will carry out the necessary adjustments and modify traffic management in line with the new solution. The department will inform road users when the camera starts operating.

Cameras on state roads
In May 2025, a child died in a road accident in Liiva after being hit by a truck trailer.
There are currently 68 speed camera cabinets on Estonia’s state roads, six of which can measure speed in both directions. The Transport Administration has 34 measuring systems, which are moved between different cabinets as needed.
The agency noted that fixed cameras help reduce speeding on high-risk sections and, consequently, the likelihood of road accidents and their possible consequences. They also make it possible to monitor driver behavior.
