Modi and Putin reaffirm strategic partnership in India
In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin — of an aggressor state — held bilateral talks ahead of the BRICS summit. According to Deutsche Welle English, the sides reaffirmed their intention to further strengthen the special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia.
Talks ahead of the summit
A statement by India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that Modi and Putin discussed cooperation between the two states in multilateral formats, particularly in BRICS during India’s chairmanship in 2026.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. Topics included conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which, according to the Indian ministry, have affected maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers.

BRICS summit participants
Putin arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS summit, scheduled for September 12–13 at the Bharat Mandapam complex. This is his first in-person participation in a BRICS summit outside Russia since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also arrived in New Delhi. He planned to hold bilateral talks with Modi on developing trade and strengthening bilateral relations.
India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, speaking at the BRICS business forum, called on the bloc’s states to link payment systems, develop trade in national currencies, and make digital trade more accessible worldwide.
