Four earthquakes struck a Spanish province in a single day
On August 18, four earthquakes with magnitudes of up to 4.8 were recorded in the Spanish province of Granada. Emergency services received more than 50 reports from local residents following the earthquakes.
In several areas, visitors to shopping centers had to be evacuated. Information regarding possible damage and casualties is still being confirmed.
Today, August 18, 2026, a series of four earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 4 on the Richter scale occurred almost consecutively in the province of Granada. The main tremors reached revised magnitudes of 4.8, 4.2, and 4.0 on the Richter scale. These earthquakes are part of a very active seismic swarm that began last Saturday.
Andalusia’s 112 emergency service received more than fifty calls related to the earthquake that occurred this morning in Granada. The calls mainly concerned cracks and landslides detected after the tremors in various parts of the province. Emergency services continue to assess the situation, and authorities are urging the public to exercise the utmost caution due to the possibility of further aftershocks.
The earthquakes have also prompted preventive measures in some of the busiest areas of the metropolitan area. The “Nevada” shopping center in Armilla and the “Serrallo Plaza” shopping center were evacuated and closed as a precaution while safety inspections are conducted following the strong tremors that occurred this morning. These measures complement the temporary closure of numerous public buildings and other facilities in Granada.
