In Italy, 8 million taxpayers account for 65% of IRPEF revenue — ANSA English

In Italy, around 8 million taxpayers with a declared gross annual income starting from 35,000 euros account for 65% of total revenue from the IRPEF personal income tax. This is stated in a report by the Itinerari Previdenziali research institute, ANSA English reports.

The study is based on tax returns for 2024. In a country with a population of nearly 59 million people, approximately 42.8 million people filed returns. At the same time, 34.1 million of them actually paid income tax.

IRPEF is Italy's personal income tax. The report presents the distribution of tax revenue according to taxpayers' declared gross annual income.

Contribution of lower-income groups

Taxpayers with a gross annual income of up to 20,000 euros account for 47% of all filers, or approximately 20.2 million people. Their contribution to total IRPEF revenue is only 5%.

If all people with incomes of up to 29,000 euros per year are taken into account, their share of revenue from this tax rises to approximately 21.33%. People declaring between 29,000 and 35,000 euros per year account for about 11.4% of total IRPEF revenue.
