In Italy, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said that the state can no longer fully pay for reconstruction after earthquakes and disasters caused by extreme weather events. This was reported by ANSA English.

According to the minister, the state no longer has the funds to finance reconstruction everywhere, and the time of fully covering such costs has passed. He said this in response to a question about the government's intention to encourage private individuals to take out disaster insurance policies.

Climate crisis and risks

Musumeci noted that the climate crisis is partly contributing to the increasing frequency of earthquakes and disasters related to extreme weather events. At the same time, he said that climate change has exacerbated an already existing situation, but should not be an excuse.

The minister added that society will inevitably have to live with risks. According to him, the state will not stand aside, and the financial burden should be shared equally.
