Israel names the most popular names for newborns — Jerusalem Post
In Israel, the most popular male name among all newborns in the year 5786 of the Hebrew calendar was Muhammad, while the most common female name was Avigail. This was reported by the Jerusalem Post, citing data from the Population and Immigration Authority released ahead of Rosh Hashanah.
As of the morning of September 6, data on 179,398 babies had been entered into Israel’s Population Registry. After Muhammad, the top 10 most popular names for boys in the overall ranking included Ariel, Yosef, Adam, David, Omer, Rafael, Lavi, Michael and Eitan.
Names among the Jewish population
Among Jewish boys, the name Ariel took first place. It was followed by David, Rafael, Lavi, Uri, Michael, Eliya, Eitan, Yehuda and Ari. Ariel also topped this ranking in 2024, when it was followed by David and Lavi.

Avigail became the most popular name for girls both in the overall list and among Jewish Israeli girls. In the overall ranking, it was followed by Miriam, Lia, Libi, Tamar, Yael, Ayala, Sarah, Ella and Naya. Among Jewish girls, Avigail was followed by Libi, Tamar, Yael, Lia, Ella, Ayala, Sarah, Noa and Naya.
Cities with the highest number of registrations
The highest number of registered births was recorded in Jerusalem, with 23,336. Bnei Brak was second with 8,225 registered babies, and Tel Aviv-Yafo was third with 7,405. Beit Shemesh registered 6,974 births, Ashdod 4,031 and Haifa 3,421.
The list of cities with more than 3,000 registered newborns also included Rishon LeZion with 3,413, Netanya with 3,343, Petah Tikva with 3,338 and Modi'in Illit with 3,113. The data were released before the start of Rosh Hashanah, which marks the beginning of the year 5787 in the Hebrew calendar.
