China charges former AstraZeneca regional head

In November of the previous year, Chinese prosecutors brought charges against two former senior executives of the company, without disclosing their names. The investigations involve illegal collection of personal data, unlawful trade practices, and medical insurance fraud. Wang was detained in October 2024, prompting AstraZeneca to restructure its local management and to pay an advance compensation of approximately $3.5 million for unpaid taxes.
The case may affect AstraZeneca’s future operations in China and reflects the tightening government oversight of the pharmaceutical sector. The company is expected to further adjust its strategy to comply with local laws and regulations.
