The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has released detailed explanations for citizens regarding the air threat levels used in the warning system. The initiative came in the wake of an incident in which an alert was issued in Vilnius and eastern regions after an unidentified drone was detected in the country’s airspace.
The new explanations were released on May 20 following a situation where the air raid alert significantly disrupted operations in the capital and regions, and part of the country’s leadership was evacuated to shelters.
A yellow alert signals a potential imminent danger, though the aerial target has not yet crossed Lithuania’s border. Citizens are advised to move to a safer location and be prepared for further action. If suspicious objects are detected, they should be reported by calling 112.
A red alert means that the aerial target is already in the country’s airspace or may cross the border in the near future. In this case, citizens are urged to immediately seek shelter—in underground facilities, basements, or special shelters. Inside a building, it is recommended to stay in the safest area, preferably “behind two walls,” and to follow official announcements.
People are also advised to carry a basic set of items: documents, money, water, and non-perishable food, medication, hygiene supplies, and a portable radio.
A white alert indicates that the threat has been completely lifted. Once it is announced, people may leave their shelters; however, citizens are urged to continue monitoring official information.
On May 20, a red alert was declared in certain areas of Lithuania and in Vilnius due to the possible appearance of a drone in the airspace. The incident led to temporary restrictions and changes in the operations of government agencies.
Latvia plans to review its approach to assessing threats posed by unmanned aerial vehicles.
The reason for the activation of the warning system in Romania was another Russian drone attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube. It caused an increased threat near the Romanian border.
