The new government has officially taken office in Hungary
On May 12, Hungary officially appointed a new government led by Péter Magyar, who represents the opposition political party “Tisza.” The formation of the new cabinet effectively concludes the political transition and change of power in the country following a long period of rule by Viktor Orbán’s government. The new government has announced its intention to revamp domestic policy and reevaluate approaches to key reforms in the country.

The formalities for the government’s appointment began in the afternoon, with the participation of Hungarian President Tamás Szujok, Péter Magyar—who has already been officially appointed prime minister—and the candidates he selected for 16 ministerial posts. Journalists noted that Szujok was trying to avoid appearing in group photos.
The appointment ceremony in parliament began after 4 p.m. The first cabinet meeting is scheduled for May 13.
Anita Orbán will serve as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Romulus Rusin-Sandi, a former military officer, will serve as Minister of Defense.
István Kapitányi heads the Ministry of Economy and Energy, and András Miklós Kárman heads the Ministry of Finance. György Balint Ruff has been appointed Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister.
As a reminder, Hungary’s new parliament, where Fidesz holds an absolute majority, convened for its first session on May 9. On that same day, Péter Magyar officially took office as Prime Minister.

Earlier, Hungary’s future Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the issue of returning the frozen Ukrainian funds of Oschadbank would only be subject to negotiations after the new government is officially formed.
