Hungary is investigating BYD subsidies following Szijjártó's appointment
Hungary has launched an investigation into government subsidies granted to the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, where former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has taken a job. This was reported by “Ukrainska Pravda,” citing “European Pravda” and Euronews.
Szijjártó’s actions have raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest, as he negotiated the provision of state subsidies to the automaker while serving in the government. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that all of Szijjártó’s decisions, negotiations, and government commitments related to BYD Hungary’s investments will be reviewed.
As part of the investigation, authorities also plan to examine subsidies, tax breaks, and permits granted to large multinational companies during Viktor Orbán’s tenure as prime minister. According to Magyar, the investigation will cover not only Szijjártó’s employment at BYD but also his role in the previous government, where he was responsible for attracting foreign investment.
“We will determine who made these decisions, who prepared them, what professional concerns were ignored, and what burden they placed on Hungarian taxpayers, workers, local communities, and the environment,” Magyar stated.
BYD is building its first European plant in Szeged, which will allow the company to avoid European Union import duties on Chinese electric vehicles. BYD’s expansion in Hungary has been criticized by environmental and human rights NGOs due to suspicions of non-compliance with standards.
On July 15, Szijjártó announced his resignation from parliament, explaining that he had received an offer to become the head of external relations and new business development at the Chinese automaker BYD. The Fidesz party stated that Viktor Orbán was aware of this decision and had personally discussed it with Szijjártó on two occasions.
