UK publishes legislation to strengthen sanctions against Iran
On September 8, the United Kingdom published legislation providing for stronger sanctions against Iran. The measures expand trade restrictions and authorities’ powers regarding vessels as part of broader efforts to curb Tehran’s nuclear program and other hostile activities, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
Restrictions on finance and trade
The British government said the new rules will limit Iran’s access to the United Kingdom’s financial system. They will also extend trade bans to additional goods, technologies and services.
In addition, the legislation prohibits Iranian aircraft from landing in the United Kingdom unless exemptions are provided for them.

Statement by the British Foreign Office
Stephen Doughty, a minister in the British foreign affairs department, said in a written statement that the legislation strengthens the United Kingdom’s actions to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. According to him, these steps are intended to help prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The Iranian Embassy in London did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment.
