U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Trump's Appeal in Jean Carroll Case — Reuters

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Donald Trump’s appeal to overturn the ruling ordering him to pay $5 million to Jean Carroll. This case involves a jury finding him guilty of sexual assault and subsequent defamation of the former columnist.

The decision effectively upholds the lower court’s previous verdict in this case.

The justices rejected Trump’s appeal after a lower court upheld the 2023 jury verdict and dismissed the U.S. president’s arguments that the trial was unfair, because the judge improperly allowed the jury to hear evidence regarding his alleged past sexual misconduct.

At Trump’s direction, the Department of Justice launched a criminal investigation into Carroll, as well as several other opponents of the president. The investigation, which came to light in May, focused on whether Carroll had given false testimony in two civil lawsuits she won against Trump.

Trump’s lawyers argued in the Supreme Court that the trial judge “erroneously allowed testimony to be presented to the jury regarding numerous allegations dating back several decades that are unverified and unrelatedto this case,” thereby violating federal rules governing the admission of evidence in a court case.

“Carroll waited more than 20 years to make baseless allegations against Donald Trump, a political opponent, only after he became the 45th president, when she could inflict maximum political damage on him and gain personal benefit,” his attorneys wrote in the complaint.

New York writer and columnist E. Jean Carroll alleges that in 1996, Trump sexually harassed her in a fitting room at a Manhattan shopping center.

In 2019, the U.S. president denied the allegations, explaining that Carroll was “not his type.” The woman sued Trump, accusing him of damaging her reputation.
