An explosion at a mine in China claimed the lives of dozens of people

A massive explosion occurred at a coal mine in China, resulting in one of the deadliest accidents in recent memory. According to official reports, at least 90 people were killed while hundreds of miners were underground, CCTV reports.

The explosion occurred on the evening of May 22 at the Liushengyu Mine in Qinuan County, in the northern province of Shanxi. At the time of the incident, 247 miners were working underground, and authorities initially reported a significantly lower death toll, citing only eight victims and a mass evacuation of people to the surface.

The information later changed—the death toll rose to at least 90 people, making the accident one of the region’s worst industrial disasters in recent years. “At the time of the explosion, 247 miners were underground,” Chinese media reports noted.

Chinese authorities have already called for a full investigation into the causes of the tragedy. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered “all necessary measures to be taken to search for and rescue the missing and provide assistance to the victims,” and also instructed that the causes of the accident be determined and those responsible be punished.

The incident has once again raised questions about safety in China’s coal mines, where such accidents, despite increased oversight, remain a serious problem.

The EU is changing its procurement rules to reduce dependence on China.
