War in Iran threatens packaging shortages and price hikes across Asia

The conflict in Iran has sparked an energy crisis already affecting the entire Asian region, Reuters reports. Since up to 50% of the world’s oil production is used to make plastic, the war threatens disruptions in the manufacturing of a wide range of products and their packaging—from cosmetics to food items

South Korean company Samyang Foods, known for its spicy Buldak noodles, has warned of potential packaging shortages. Container manufacturer Yonwoo, which works with L’Oréal and other cosmetics brands, is urgently sourcing materials. A company representative emphasized: “It’s not about price — if supplies aren’t available, products simply cannot be sold without containers.”

In Japan, the Takashimaya department store chain has warned of possible price increases for clothing and household appliances. Chip maker Yamayoshi Seika has temporarily halted production of popular Wasabef snacks due to ingredient shortages.

Liu Chaonan, a packaging manufacturer from Longgan, noted that the situation in Iran is seriously impacting their industry and that price adjustments might be necessary.

Thus, the war in Iran has not only triggered an energy crisis but also caused major disruptions in supply chains and production, threatening the availability of consumer goods and packaging across Asia.

Experts forecast that if the conflict continues, further price increases and product shortages are likely.
