Nigeria’s Vice President Shettima to present biography of Brigadier General Musa Usman
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima will present a posthumous biography of Brigadier General Musa Usman, the first military governor of the former North-Eastern State, in Abuja on September 14, 2026. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the presentation will begin at 10:00 at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in the Kado district.
Usman’s biography
The 363-page book is titled “Brigadier Musa Usman (1940–1991): Service and Impact.” It was written by Mahmud Jega and Theophilus Abba. The publication is dedicated to Usman’s life, his military career, and his work as governor.
Usman served in the Nigerian Air Force and led the North-Eastern State from 1967 to 1975. The territory he governed was later divided into six present-day Nigerian states: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe.
According to the book’s description, Usman laid the infrastructure foundation for the region’s socioeconomic sector, education, and healthcare. In the foreword, former Nigerian head of state Yakubu Gowon described Usman as a man known for integrity and honesty, and linked the infrastructure achievements of the country’s northeast to investments made by his administration.

Presentation participants
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum is expected to be the chief host of the event. The governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states have been invited as co-hosts. Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babagana Kingibe will present the book, while Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari will participate as a special guest.
The ceremony will be chaired by retired Major General IBM Haruna, a former Federal Commissioner for Information. Retired Major General Ike Nwachukwu is expected to deliver the keynote address, while the book will be reviewed by Abubakar Mohammed, Director General of the Centre for Democratic Development Research and Training at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.
Former head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar also mentioned that Major Usman was appointed to stabilize operations at the Nigerian Air Force station in Kaduna after the departure of German technical specialists who had helped establish it. Admission to the presentation will be free.
