Volcanic eruption in Indonesia halts airport operations — Euronews
The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia caused the cancellation of all flights at Jakarta’s main Soekarno-Hatta Airport and disrupted operations at other airports. The volcano, located about 150 kilometres from the capital, erupted on Saturday, spewing lava and high columns of ash.
Airport closures
According to Euronews, Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation confirmed that eight airports in the region suspended operations over the weekend due to volcanic ash in the airspace. This disrupted hundreds of flights and left more than 170,000 passengers unable to travel.
Airport operator Angkasa Pura said that at least four airports, including Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, extended their suspension of operations until 18:00 on Monday (11:00 GMT). Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, which serves commercial and military flights, also extended its suspension.

Further volcanic activity
The national geological agency said that a high likelihood of further volcanic activity remained until Monday morning. Anak Krakatau has been intermittently active since the beginning of the last century, when it emerged in the caldera formed after the catastrophic 1883 eruption of Krakatau.
In 2018, the partial collapse of Anak Krakatau triggered a tsunami that killed 429 people and forced thousands to leave their homes.
