WHO and Africa CDC Launch $518 Million Ebola Response Plan
The World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), has announced the launch of a continental preparedness and response plan for Ebola outbreaks.
The initiative aims to raise $518 million to support African countries in preparing for potential outbreaks, as well as in their rapid detection and response.
According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, effectively containing Ebola depends not only on funding but also on public trust and active community participation in anti-epidemic measures.
The plan is designed to last six months and calls for coordination among governments, international partners, and local communities under the “One Response” approach. Key areas include disease surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, infection prevention, strengthened border controls, and rapid response to new cases of infection.
Special attention will be given to protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening cross-border cooperation among African countries.
The WHO emphasized that the new initiative will complement the national Ebola response programs already being implemented by the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded its 17th Ebola outbreak, which has already claimed the lives of 80 people. This time, the disease was likely caused by the little-studied Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, rather than the more common Zaire ebolavirus.
