Zakharova complained about psychological abuse of Russian athletes

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed that Russian athletes were being subjected to alleged “psychological abuse” due to restrictions on their participation in international competitions.

Her statement came amid changes in international sports following the IOC’s decision in July 2026 to lift general recommendations restricting the participation of Russian athletes. At the same time, some countries continue to oppose their participation and, in particular, are restricting entry for Russian representatives.

Moscow is outraged by the restrictions on athletes from Russia

Zakharova cynically suggested that this is allegedly being done solely to eliminate competition from them.

“Why didn’t they want to let them in, and why didn’t they let them in? So that they wouldn’t take home medals and so that they wouldn’t demonstrate either sport at the highest level or sport as part of the Olympic spirit. This high-stakes game continues, and it will continue,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

In July, the European Union adopted its 21st package of sanctions. Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev and FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich were subject to the restrictions.

Zakharova cynically remarked that the EU supposedly sees the results of Degtyarev’s work and has therefore imposed the restrictions.

This is according to reports in Russian propaganda media.

Zakharova accused Denmark of aiding Ukrainian hackers.

In Russia, there is talk of resuming energy exports to Germany.

Zakharova expressed outrage over Lithuania’s initiative regarding Russian participation in tournaments.

MEPs are demanding an investigation into the FIFA president over the bonus paid to Trump.

U.S. President Donald Trump could become one of the key figures at the 2026 World Cup final, and FIFA is reportedly ready to deviate from its long-standing ceremonial protocol. This could allow for an exceptional format for the politician’s participation in official match events.
