Zelenskyy discusses energy support with Eisuke Mori in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Kyiv with Eisuke Mori, speaker of the lower house of Japan's parliament. The sides discussed energy support for Ukraine, The Japan Times reports, citing the Office of the President of Ukraine.

Japan's support

Zelenskyy thanked Japan for its consistent support for Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion by the Russian Federation, an aggressor state, in 2022. He separately welcomed Tokyo's participation in the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a NATO mechanism for purchasing defense equipment for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president also invited Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to visit Ukraine.

Statements on sovereignty

During the conversation, Zelenskyy mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin's August visit to one of the four islands near Hokkaido that are controlled by Russia and are the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Tokyo and Moscow. The Ukrainian president emphasized support for Japan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For his part, Mori said that Japan consistently supports Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence. He arrived in Kyiv on Monday and addressed the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday. According to the secretariat of Japan's lower house of parliament, Mori became the first head of a chamber of the Japanese parliament to visit Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's invasion.
