China's Ministry of State Security warns of online manipulation and worship of the West
China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) has warned internet users about attempts to manipulate public opinion online through so-called "leading the rhythm" (带节奏), a practice of spreading content deliberately designed to provoke conflicts and undermine social stability.
According to the MSS statement, content creators manipulate information by editing, montage, and selective citation, labeling and stigmatizing certain social phenomena or groups to intentionally fuel hostility among internet users.
The ministry also noted that some social media content creators depict an "exquisite civilization" and "foreign lifestyle," emphasizing the advantages of the West while downplaying its weaknesses. These bloggers deliberately "filter" messages to create an idealized image.
China’s Ministry of State Security is responsible for domestic security and countering destabilizing activities within the country, especially in cyberspace.
The warning highlights the ongoing threat of information manipulation online, emphasizing the need for stricter control over the information space and promoting critical thinking among users. Measures are expected to intensify against such manipulative practices in the future.
