A marine drone found off the coast of Greece likely ended up there due to a technical malfunction.

This was reported by Reuters.

According to the agency, the explosive-laden marine drone was found by fishermen on May 7 near the island of Lefkada. Greek investigators believe the drone lost its bearings due to a technical problem.

Preliminary analysis, including of fuel residues, indicates that the drone likely did not travel a long distance, so the theory that it was launched from Libya is considered unlikely.

Greek military and intelligence agencies are continuing their technical examination of the drone, specifically attempting to decode encrypted data to determine its origin and route.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias stated that the drone posed a serious threat to civilian shipping, and Athens has already informed the EU about the incident.

The Ukrainian company Uforce, which develops maritime drones, has officially denied any involvement with the device found in the Ionian Sea.

Greece has claimed that the maritime drone near Lefkada is of “Ukrainian origin.”

A conflict is brewing between Ukraine and Greece over maritime drones.
