The British Prime Minister said he is ready to stand up to Trump in the interests of the country
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that he does not rule out public disagreements with U.S. President Donald Trump if necessary to protect the United Kingdom’s national interests.
Burnham noted that his first meeting with Trump went well, and he described the U.S. leader as “very friendly.” At the same time, the prime minister did not directly answer whether he fully trusts the U.S. president, emphasizing that the global situation is constantly changing.
“I cannot say that I will not hold a different opinion than he does, or that I will not have to express a different idea that is right for the United Kingdom,” Burnham said.
According to him, the primary duty of the British prime minister is to protect the interests of his own country.
“You must, first and foremost, protect your own national interests. That is what is required of you if you want to do this job properly,” he emphasized.
Burnham also stated that he is prepared to criticize Donald Trump’s decisions if he believes it is the right move for Britain.
Separately, the British prime minister addressed the situation surrounding Iran. He said he had concerns about a possible conflict between the U.S. and Tehran and would not shy away from expressing his own position.
He made these remarks in an interview with the BBC.
