78-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger shared what helps him stay young
Hollywood actor and bodybuilding star Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed the secret to his great physical shape at age 78. He explained that age is no reason to give up an active lifestyle and continues to keep himself in shape.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is known not only as an actor but also as a bodybuilder. Most of his life has been devoted to sports. In his younger years, he always trained with heavy weights, lifted heavier loads, and preferred intense workouts. This is how he earned his bodybuilding titles.
However, as he’s gotten older, the actor has changed his philosophy on life. He believes it is essential to maintain discipline not only during workouts but also during recovery. “Discipline in recovery, adaptation, and continuing to move—even when it gets harder to move,” Schwarzenegger noted.

The athlete believes that pain causes people to give up an active lifestyle. This, in his opinion, is what leads people to believe they are incapable of what they are actually capable of.
“I began to notice this pattern in many people around me. At first, they stop taking the stairs because their knees hurt. Then they give up their after-dinner walks because they feel stiff. They start avoiding things that used to come easily to them. Gradually, without even realizing it, they narrow their own world, and their limitations begin to define their lives,” the actor noted.

Schwarzenegger said that he himself has often heard the misconception that aging means constant pain, stiffness, and weakness. But despite having undergone several surgeries on his shoulder and heart, as well as a hip replacement, he continues to lead an active lifestyle. “I know exactly what it’s like to hear that your body isn’t what it used to be. To put it bluntly, getting older sucks. But I’ve never accepted that aging means living a smaller, slower life,” he says.

That’s why Arnold Schwarzenegger is convinced that old age is no obstacle to physical activity. For example, after heart surgery, he had to give up strenuous workouts, so he changed his approach to training. He returned to working out with light weights to get back into shape.
However, now, after 60 years of training, his workouts don’t look the same as they did 20 years ago. Schwarzenegger has replaced his beach runs with bike rides, and he takes frequent breaks while skiing.
“The movements I’d been doing for decades suddenly required much more concentration and patience. But more importantly, I realized how easy it is to let limitations take over your life if you don’t actively fight them. Of course, there are mornings when I really don’t feel like getting out of bed. My joints feel heavy, and working out seems like a distant prospect. On days like that, I don’t wait for inspiration. I get up anyway, and somewhere during my bike ride or after a few sets, I start to feel better again,” the bodybuilder said.
