George and Amal Clooney are being evacuated from their home in France due to widespread wildfires
Hollywood actor George Clooney and his wife, human rights activist Amal Clooney, are leaving their estate in the south of France due to the massive wildfires sweeping the country. The couple is also evacuating their children from the region, which is in a high-risk zone.
The family lives in the town of Brignoles in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The Clooneys announced their decision to temporarily leave the estate in an official letter to the town’s mayor, which was also confirmed by a representative of the actor.
“At this time, we do not know if our beautiful home will survive this terrible ordeal. We hope that you and the residents of our town are safe. Whatever happens, we remain part of this community and will help to fully rebuild it,” the couple’s statement reads.
Although they own properties in the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States, the French estate is the family’s primary residence. Clooney has repeatedly explained that he chose to live in the French countryside so that his children could grow up far from the paparazzi and the Hollywood lifestyle.
According to the Associated Press, the area affected by wildfires in France is already four times the size of Paris. CNN reports that approximately 224,000 people have been evacuated in the Gironde region of France, and another 3,000 or so in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. In Spain, more than 63,000 people have fled their homes due to the fires, and in Greece, the wildfires have claimed the lives of two rescue workers.
