Ornella Muti and her daughter have decided to obtain Russian citizenship and move to Russia
Italian actress Ornella Muti, who was hailed as a movie sex symbol in the 1980s, plans to obtain Russian citizenship and move to Russia along with her daughter, singer Nike Rivelli. Rivelli made this announcement in a statement to Russian media.
According to the actress’s daughter, they are applying for Russian passports because they want to “feel at home” due to their Russian heritage.
“We are applying for Russian citizenship so that we can truly feel at home. We have Russian roots; we cannot renounce our heritage, our family, and our friends,” said Naike Rivelli.
She also stated that she and her mother are considering buying a home in Moscow or St. Petersburg and plan to move there with other family members. Naike Rivelli claims that their affinity for Russia does not draw criticism in Italy, and she also spoke of Italians’ alleged “love” for Russian culture.
At the same time, Italian media had previously criticized Ornella Muti for her trips to Russia after the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. In particular, her participation in Russian events sparked outrage among some of her fellow citizens.
Ornella Muti has repeatedly demonstrated her support for Russia. She has attributed this to her heritage—her maternal grandparents were reportedly from St. Petersburg.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, the actress did not condemn Russian aggression and continued to attend events in Russia.
Muti had previously been embroiled in scandals due to her contacts with Russian authorities. In 2010, she obtained a fake medical certificate to avoid participating in a performance in Italy and attend a dinner with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. She was criticized for this incident, but later compensated the theater for its losses.
