A 53-kilogram pumpkin displayed at a fair in Estonia — ERR News
In Palamuse, Estonia, a 53-kilogram pumpkin and a 14-kilogram cabbage were displayed at the 27th Paunvere fair. About 20,000 people visited the event in Jõgeva County over the weekend, while Palamuse has a population of around 550, ERR News reports.
Large vegetables at auction
One of the main exhibits was a 53-kilogram pumpkin entered in a competition in Palamuse. It was grown by Toomas Puusepp, who also brought a 42-kilogram pumpkin and a 14-kilogram cabbage.
The large vegetables were delivered to the exhibition by a garden tractor. They later found new owners at an auction during the fair.

Impact of weather and imports
Fair participants assessed the vegetable-growing season differently. Vegetable grower Tetiana said that this year's harvest was better than last year's, but there were fewer visitors and buyers at the fair than in previous years.
At the same time, a cool and rainy spring almost completely ruined the harvest of open-field cucumbers and tomatoes. Vegetable grower Ihor said that the cucumber harvest had decreased by about half, while competition from cheaper imported produce complicates the sale of local vegetables.
Farmer Raimo from southern Estonia, on the other hand, harvested four tonnes of watermelons. They were grown in open ground using protective covering.
