For the first time in history, a woman has been appointed head of the Church of England

A historic event took place in the United Kingdom: Sarah Mullally became the first woman to lead the Church of England as Archbishop of Canterbury. The enthronement ceremony was held at Canterbury Cathedral.

Nexta.Live reports on this.

The event was attended by religious and government leaders.

The event was attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other government officials.

For the first time in 1,400 years, a woman will assume the position of Archbishop of Canterbury, the spiritual head of the Church of England. Sarah Mullally will succeed Justin Welby, who resigned following a scandal involving the cover-up of child sexual abuse within the church.

Mullally is a former Chief Nursing Officer of England who has led the Diocese of London since 2018 and served in the House of Lords. She is known as an advocate for expanding the role of women in the church and granting blessings to same-sex couples, while also supporting traditional marriage.

The inauguration took place at Canterbury Cathedral. The decision has already been called “historic,” though it may cause conflicts with conservative parishes in Africa, where women’s ordination is not recognized.

“This is a great responsibility, and I am ready to serve the church and believers around the world,” said Sarah Mullally.
