Britain will vote on new banknotes featuring animals instead of those bearing Churchill's image

The Bank of England has announced the launch of a month-long nationwide vote in which the British public will select wildlife representatives for the redesigned banknotes.

Animals, birds, and insects will appear on the £5, £10, £20, and £50 banknotes.

They will completely replace portraits of famous historical figures, including wartime leader Winston Churchill.

For the final selection stage, experts have prepared a special list featuring eighteen unique species of local wildlife.

Among the top contenders to appear on the pound notes are the Atlantic puffin, the bottlenose dolphin, the European hedgehog, the gray seal, the red fox, the bumblebee, and the common frog.

The British public has the opportunity to review the entire list in detail and share their opinions on the future design of the national currency.

According to the approved rules, voting will last exactly one month—until July 3 of this year.

Citizens can select a maximum of two animals in each of the designated denominations to ultimately narrow the list down to the four best options.

Despite the large-scale public survey, the final and decisive word in approving the new banknote design still rests with Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey.

Such a radical change in the visual concept of banknotes has sparked a mixed reaction across the country.

The decision to remove prominent historical figures from the banknotes, particularly former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, sparked significant criticism and a wave of debate among Britain’s leading political figures earlier this year.

The BBC reports on this.

Britain struck a blow against Russia’s schemes to recruit migrants for the war against Ukraine

As a reminder, Ukraine has imposed new sanctions against Russia.

The European Union may impose sanctions against individuals and companies suspected of facilitating the transport of grain, exported from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, to the port of Haifa (Israel).

As a reminder, the European Union has expanded sanctions against Belarus as part of a new, 20th package of restrictions targeting Russia and its allies. The decision affects Belarus’s defense sector, as well as entities that, according to the EU, support Russia’s war against Ukraine. For the first time, a Chinese organization linked to Belarusian military production has also been added to the list.
