Ukraine and Turkey are preparing a new gas agreement

Ukraine and Turkey are preparing a new gas agreement

Ukraine and Turkey are close to reaching a major energy agreement that calls for joint gas production in the Black Sea and the creation of a new route for supplying gas to Europe via Ukraine’s gas transmission system. This was discussed during talks between the energy ministers of both countries.

The parties are also discussing the possibility of supplying up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas per year and developing a strategic partnership in the energy sector.

Ukraine and Turkey are negotiating new energy projects that could shift the balance of gas routes in the region by combining joint production in the Black Sea with the use of Ukraine’s gas transmission system as one of the key supply routes to Europe.

According to Shmyhal, one of the key ideas is to create a new gas transportation route through Ukraine using its gas transmission system and underground storage facilities, which could provide up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas per year and become an important resource not only for domestic needs but also for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. “We are interested in creating a new gas supply route using the Ukrainian gas transmission system and underground storage facilities. This project is capable of providing up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas per year not only for Ukraine but also for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe,” the minister noted.

Separately, the parties are considering the prospect of jointly developing gas fields in the Black Sea, as well as working out technical and commercial models for implementing future projects, which are intended to define the format of cooperation for years to come. During the meeting, they also discussed issues of energy security, the stability of Ukraine’s power grid, and preparations for the upcoming heating season, which remains one of the key challenges for Kyiv.

The minister emphasized that these negotiations are a continuation of the agreements reached at the highest political level between Ukraine and Turkey, and underscored the strategic nature of cooperation in the energy sector.

Ultimately, the parties view the energy partnership not only as an economic project but also as a security element in the Black Sea region, where the interests of key players are increasingly intertwined. This was announced by Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal following talks with his Turkish counterpart Alparslan Bayraktar.

In Ukraine, alongside the restoration of the destroyed power grid, a new energy model is being developed that is intended to be more decentralized, resilient, and shock-resistant. It is being built on the principle of “energy honeycombs,” where responsibility and resources are distributed among the state, regions, communities, and businesses.
