A family of a former mayor was killed with a biological weapon in an Italian town
In the Italian town of Pietracatella (Campobasso province), authorities are investigating the double murder of the daughter and wife of former mayor Giovanni Di Vita.
For a long time, law enforcement officials believed that the cause of death for his 15-year-old daughter Sara and his 50-year-old wife Antonella was simply food poisoning following a holiday dinner, but a subsequent forensic examination revealed traces of a biological weapon—ricin—in their bodies.
The 55-year-old former politician himself also fell seriously ill after the same dinner, but his toxicology test came back negative. His older daughter, 19-year-old Alice, was not present at the event and was not harmed.
The Italian prosecutor’s office is currently investigating the case as a homicide; there are no suspects at this time. Among the main theories being considered by investigators are long-standing social conflicts and a settling of scores related to the head of the family’s former political activities.
