Britain has refused to support the U.S.-led naval blockade of Iranian ports

UA NEWS 13 April 2026 16:30
Britain has refused to support the U.S.-led naval blockade of Iranian ports

The United Kingdom will not participate in the naval blockade of Iranian ports announced by the United States after negotiations between Tehran and Washington ended without result.

The BBC reports this, noting that British naval ships and troops will not be involved in operations to directly block Iranian ports.

Despite this, London is keeping its mine sweepers and anti-drone assets in the region to ensure the safety of navigation. A British government spokesperson emphasized that freedom of navigation and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open remain priorities for the country, as they are essential for the stability of the global economy.

The United States announced the blockade after diplomatic efforts failed to secure a long-term peace agreement to end hostilities in the Middle East. Britain’s stance reflects the ally’s cautious approach to direct military escalation in the region, despite shared strategic goals.

Currently, the British side is focusing on protecting trade routes while avoiding active participation in the economic isolation of Iran. The situation in the Persian Gulf remains tense, as London’s refusal could affect the scale and effectiveness of the American initiative.

Natural gas prices on European markets surged after the U.S. announced its intention to block all ships in the Strait of Hormuz heading to Iranian ports.

The U.S. announced the start of mine clearance operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, U.S. warships have passed through the strait for the first time since the start of the war without Iran’s approval.
