Journalists have identified the names of more than 223,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine
Journalists and volunteers have officially confirmed the names of 223,539 Russian servicemen who have died since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This is according to a joint investigation by the BBC’s Russian Service, the publication “Mediazona,” and a team of independent researchers.
The lists of occupiers were compiled through detailed monitoring of open sources, analysis of public obituaries on social media, photographs from regional cemeteries, data from military memorials, and information from Russian state registries.
Experts interviewed emphasize that the aggressor country’s actual losses are significantly higher, as this method of calculation captures only a portion of the information.
Analysis of open sources may reflect approximately 45–65% of the total number of eliminated invaders. Within the structure of confirmed losses, the largest share is currently accounted for by so-called volunteers—82,224 individuals.
Next are combatants not identified by researchers—48,177; career and contract military personnel—45,923; former prisoners—25,367; and forcibly mobilized citizens—18,955 people.
As of May 29, the highest number of military personnel killed among all regions of the Russian Federation was officially recorded in the Republic of Bashkortostan.
Local authorities and media outlets there have collectively confirmed the deaths of 10,149 people.
At the same time, large-scale mathematical modeling based on the Russian Federation’s Register of Inheritance Cases indicates that from February 2022 through the end of 2025, approximately 352,000 Russian servicemen—citizens of Russia—could have been killed.
