"Hezbollah has begun using fiber-optic-controlled FPV drones," — BBC

The Lebanese group Hezbollah has begun actively using a new type of fiber-optic-controlled FPV drone, adopting a tactic that has been widely used during the war in Ukraine.

This is reported by the BBC.

According to the report, fiber-optic drones have become one of Hezbollah’s key combat systems in its confrontation with Israeli forces.

“Fiber-optic drones have become Hezbollah’s primary weapon against Israeli soldiers and civilians… They are currently viewed as the greatest threat, the BBC notes.

In particular, on May 27, one Israeli soldier was killed and two others were wounded as a result of a strike by such a drone near the border settlement of Shomera.

According to Israeli analysts, it is precisely these drones that have caused the majority of military casualties since the latest ceasefire agreements.

FPV drones with fiber-optic control:

  • fly at low altitudes;
  • do not emit radio signals;
  • are controlled via a thin cable;
  • are not susceptible to traditional electronic warfare measures;
  • allow the operator to see the target in real time without interference.

Israeli think tanks note that Hezbollah may have adopted this technology and tactics from the war in Ukraine, where such drones are actively used by both sides.

Currently, most attacks are directed against Israeli military forces in southern Lebanon, though strikes on civilian areas along the Israeli border have also been recorded, according to the Alma Research Center.

Prior to this, the Hezbollah group announced a series of attacks on Israeli military targets, including air defense systems. According to the militants, dozens of strikes were carried out over the past 24 hours.

Prior to this, Hezbollah militants reported a strike on a battery of Israel’s “Iron Dome” air defense system. According to their information, a kamikaze drone equipped with remote control and first-person video transmission capabilities was used for the attack.

As a reminder, Hezbollah has set conditions for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.

Earlier, Iran announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping for the duration of the ceasefire in Lebanon.

In Lebanon, a French peacekeeper was killed during the shelling, and three other soldiers were wounded and evacuated. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the incident, stating that Hezbollah or forces affiliated with it were responsible. Paris is demanding an investigation and punishment for those responsible.
