A sports doctor from Lviv died after being poisoned by lily of the valley
Zynoviy Polyansky, head of the medical department at the Lviv Professional College of Sports, died in Lviv after accidentally ingesting a poisonous plant. The doctor and his wife were admitted to the intensive care unit after consuming autumn crocus leaves, which they had purchased under the guise of wild garlic.
This is reported in a post on the college’s page. It is noted that the wife’s condition is currently assessed as moderate.
Doctors determined that the cause of the tragedy was autumn crocus—a deadly poisonous plant for which there is no antidote. It visually resembles wild garlic but lacks the characteristic garlic odor and has a different leaf structure. Following the death of the renowned specialist, who had worked with athletes for decades, the police have launched a criminal investigation.

Consumption of autumn crocus leads to severe symptoms, including nausea, a burning sensation in the mouth, and a drop in blood pressure. To avoid fatal mistakes, experts advise rubbing the leaves between your fingers: the absence of a strong onion or garlic odor indicates that the plant is poisonous. The doctor’s funeral was a great loss for the entire sports community of Lviv Oblast.
