NATO Secretary General Praised Germany's Response to the Russian Sabotage in Leipzig
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the German government’s response to Russia’s hybrid attacks and expressed the Alliance’s full solidarity with Berlin.
He made these remarks following a conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, commenting on Russia’s attempt to carry out a drone attack at Leipzig Airport on August 4, for which there is irrefutable evidence of Moscow’s involvement.
The NATO chief emphasized that the Alliance will continue to strengthen its capabilities to deter and defend allies against malicious actions. According to Rutte, Russia’s attempts to intimidate partners, undermine their unity, and halt support for Ukraine are futile, and NATO’s commitment to collective defense remains unwavering.

As a reminder, Berlin is prepared to officially hold Russia responsible for the attempted drone attack in Leipzig. Germany is also considering imposing direct sanctions against Russian entities. Specifically, the Russian Consulate General in Bonn will be closed, the agreement regarding the “Russian House” in Berlin will be terminated, Berlin will propose new lists of Russian individuals to the European Union for sanctions in the context of hybrid attacks and will tighten entry controls for Russian citizens. Germany has also announced that it will increase pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
