How the alarm tone can shape your mood and productivity
Scientists have discovered that the choice of alarm melody significantly affects how your day will unfold — from increased stress to a boost in brain activity. A sharp, high-pitched alarm suddenly activates your nervous system, waking the body instantly while the brain remains in a sleep state. Frequent exposure to this stress may lead to anxiety and decreased concentration.

Researchers found that a melodic rhythm with a tempo of 100-120 beats per minute in the key of C at around 500 Hz has the opposite effect — it gently activates the auditory cortex and gradually wakes the brain. This helps maintain cortisol at normal levels and ensures a sustained feeling of alertness throughout the day.
For their study, scientists selected the best alarm tones from 140 standard melodies on iPhone and Samsung smartphones: Sencha and By the Seaside for iPhone, as well as Synth Bell and Roller Disco for Samsung.
These findings highlight the importance of choosing a suitable alarm sound for overall wellbeing and daytime productivity. Selecting gentler tones can reduce waking stress and promote a positive mood.
Looking ahead, such research could lead to personalized alarm clocks with melodies tailored perfectly to individuals, thus improving sleep quality and daily life.
