The King of Denmark has tasked incumbent Prime Minister Frederiksen with forming a new government
On March 25, 2026, King Frederik X of Denmark appointed Social Democratic Party leader Mette Frederiksen as the chief negotiator for the formation of a new cabinet.
This was reported by TV2.
The monarch’s decision is based on the results of the early parliamentary elections and official recommendations from the coalition of political forces. The potential coalition includes the Social Democrats, the Socialist People’s Party, the “United List,” the “Radical Left,” and “Alternative,” which together won 84 seats in the Folketing.
Frederiksen is beginning consultations with other parties to ensure a stable parliamentary majority amid new security challenges in Europe. Denmark’s former prime minister has repeatedly emphasized the priority of supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and the need to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Nordic region. Once the negotiation process is complete and a coalition agreement is reached, the new government will be officially presented to the king for approval.
According to official election results, Frederiksen’s center-left Social Democratic Party lost voter support, garnering 21.9% of the vote compared to 27.5% in the 2022 election. Despite this, it remained the largest political force in the country.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen submitted the government’s resignation during a meeting with King Frederik X.
