The Ukrainian police are switching to an enhanced operational mode due to the days of mourning
Starting April 17, law enforcement agencies in Ukraine have been operating under heightened security measures in preparation for the days of remembrance and due to increased security risks.
This was announced by Anatoliy Seredynskyi, First Deputy Head of the National Police’s Department of Preventive Activities.
According to him, traditionally, a week after Easter, citizens visit cemeteries en masse, which requires additional security measures from the police.
“Traditionally, a week after Easter, we honor the memory of the deceased. This is accompanied by large numbers of citizens and clergy at cemeteries. Accordingly, starting today, the police are stepping up security measures near such sites,” he noted.
Controls on highways have also been tightened due to risks associated with explosive devices and landmines.
The police reported that approximately 1,000 cemeteries in Ukraine remain closed to visitors. This applies to areas in frontline regions, specifically in the Kherson, Chernihiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions.
These decisions were made by military administrations for security reasons.
“This year, it is best to avoid places where there is a direct ban, as it is truly dangerous. It is dangerous due to rocket fire, FPV drones, and the risk of landmines,” Seredynsky emphasized.
Law enforcement officials warn that access to such locations will be restricted, and the bans are mandatory.
In the event of an air raid alert in open areas, citizens are advised to use natural cover and minimize their time in open spaces.
Also, if suspicious objects are found, do not touch them—report them to the police immediately.
As a reminder, this year’s Easter holidays and memorial days in the Kyiv region will take place under heightened security measures. Due to the risk of enemy shelling, residents of the region are urged to avoid large gatherings of people.
In Kyiv, during the days of remembrance, from April 19 to 22, additional public transportation will be provided to cemeteries. It will run from 6:00 a.m. to approximately 4:00 p.m. Authorities promise more buses, trams, and trolleybuses to make it easier for people to get there.
